SPS Guwahati India Open International Rating Chess tournament 2024
The South Point School Guwahati India Open International Rating Chess tournament was held from 25th to 30th December 2024 at South Point School Barsapara Guwahati.
A total of ten lakhs rupees were distributed as cash prize in the tournament.
Altogether 397 players which is the highest ever participants in any chess event in the entire north east India participated in this Swiss league ten rounds tournament which was recognized by the World Chess Federation, All India Chess Federation and All Assam Chess Association.
The tournanent was inaugurated by making a symbolic move on the chess board by Dr S Lakshmanan,IAS, Secretary Govt of Assam, presence of Kavyashree Mahanta, IAS, Secretary Govt of Assam, Dr B Kalyan Chakravarthy, Additional Chief Secretary Govt of Assam, Krishnanjan Chanda, Principal South Point School, Jyotirmoy Purkayastha, Vice President, South Point School Management, Pulin Saha, Senior Sports correpondent among others.The tournament is held every year coinciding with the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Late Atal Bihari Vajpayjee, the 10th Prime Minister of India.
The tournament was conducted by Assam’s first International Arbiter, Biswajit Bharadwaj, with support from a team of esteemed arbiters, including International Arbiter (IA) Monimala Sinha, FIDE Arbiter (FA) Lakhya Jyoti Saikia, FA Acharya Leela Prasad, FA Suraj Gupta, Senior National Arbiter (SNA) Homen Chandra Rabha, SNA Rishita Sinha, SNA Apurba Sonowal, SNA Oly Baruah Rajkumar, SNA Rajnish Verma, SNA Puja Dhar, and SNA Mrinal Kakati.
The top 4 boards of the tournament were played in a separate hall with DGT board used for the top 10 boards. FIDE Arbiter Ravi Kant Tiwari was in
charge of the live broadcast.
International Master Mayank Chakraborty, a student of South
Point School clinched the champion’s title. Mayank was the top seed of the
tournament which feautured a strong field of players including International
Master Vikramaditya Kulkarni of Maharastra and Neelash Saha of Railways.
Mayank remained undefeated in all the ten rounds of this
swiss league classical event. In the final round he defeated Parambata Sarkar
of west Bengal in just 35 moves to emerge champion. Samyak Dharewe of West
Bengal finished on second position while Vikramaditya Kulkarni of Maharastra
was placed third.
The champion of the tournament was awarded one lakh as prize
money while the runners up and second runners up went home with eighty thousand
and seventy thousand respectively.
The Prize distribution ceremony was attended by renowned
Chess coach, Motivational speaker and Former commonwealth chess champion Atanu
Lahiri, senior literary scholar & social worker Mrinalini Devi, Senior IAS
officer Kavyashree Mahanta, Principal South Point School Krishnanjan Chanda,
Deputy Commisioner of Police Amitabh Basumatary, Project Head of Snehabandhan Vijaya
Sarma and Dr Siben Dutta of Down Town Hospital.
A souvenir was also published on the closing day of the event.
